I was more of a ten white baby grows, a carrier from Mothercare and back to work in 3 months, it's my biggest regret not having spent time with my kids when they were tiny. If my career break has taught me something, it's that no job is worth missing your children for.
What did other working mums do? Continue to work? Not work? Regret giving up work? All of my friends have a different story, I don't think there is a 'right' answer, but I would love to hear about your experiences
Hi Alexandra.....I stayed home, and loved it, but often wonder who I would be now if I had really stayed "out there"? I don't regret one moment, but now that she is 18, I need to make up for some lost time. I've really enjoyed all of your posts, and wish you another interesting and happy year.
ReplyDeleteI became institutionalised by work, it has taken a break of three years to get over that. It has really changed the way that I look at the world of work, the break has definitely made me more clear about what I am prepared to give up for a pay check. I hope that you continue to blog, your posts are perfection, mine are scruffy and second rate, but if I aimed for perfection, I would never post anything!
DeleteI think the grass is always greener, and there is no obvious solution. Both choices benefit us and our children in different ways I suppose. My blog is just a diary, and a way to document a hard won battle for peace inside myself, and happiness despite societies need to sort us all into categories. My New Years resolution is to really get fit. You are an amazing role model!

ReplyDeleteMy mum stayed at home but I don't think she was happy, she always threatened to 'run away and leave us', she would have been much happier if she had worked and had a life outside of domesticity.
Most of my friends who chose the babies would agree with that, there is not a 'right' answer, but I know if my kids go off the rails, I will forever blame the fact that I wasn't there when they were tiny. However conversely, they are aware that I beat myself up about it, so they might just stay on the straight and narrow for fear of upsetting me!

We were completely broke and it definitely affected my career path ... but I don't regret it for a moment. Then again, I am in total awe of friends of mine who are up at 6, children dressed, fed and in creche by 7.30, so that they are at their desks by 8 ... and all so they can leave by 5. Truly, truly, I don't think I would have ever had that much dedication or energy!!! But now, to the important question ... did you buy the Ash wedge trainers??
ReplyDeleteHa! No I didn't, someone left a comment on Does My Bum look 40 saying that they had had their day. I am thinking about the Acne Pistol boots which are also on sale. I can't believe the organisation of the women you describe above, one of my friends does it with FIVE children from 1-16, all boys, I think the range of ages makes it tougher rather than easier. When I am having a sneaky extra 10 minutes in bed I often ponder what she will already have had to achieve to get her family out of the house!
DeleteHappy New Year to you Alexandra.....I stayed at home with both my children and did the full on Mummy thing. I didn't go back to work until the youngest was thirteen and the oldest 14. I even Home Educated them for a couple of years too. I loved being a full time Mum but it was very full on and sometimes hard work. Wouldn't change it though.
ReplyDeleteThat's really great, to get them into their teenage years, it must set them up for life. I know that a lot of the confidence that I had when I was younger came from knowing my mum was always around (of course I totally took her foregranted at the time). I worry with mine that they didn't feel that level of protection and unrelenting support and it will effect them later in life.
